We Journey Together
By Theresa O'Connor, Former Daily Work Office Manager
We are all on a journey in life. For myself, I have had the incredible opportunity to journey as the Program Manager at Daily Work for the past two and a half years. It has been an honor to serve the diverse population of job seekers and social work interns at Daily Work. I have had the opportunity to grow and learn as a professional and enrich my knowledge and appreciation for the richness culture brings to relationships, work places, and in my life.
In words made famous by Mother Teresa, we hear:
“Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”
Here, at Daily Work, people enter our doors with dreams of providing for their families, of getting ahead, and living the American dream. Our social work interns diligently work to learn their social work skills to assist job seekers with setting and attaining their goals to be able to earn a sustainable, livable wage that provides the support needed for a good life.
My time at Daily Work has been filled with rewards of goals attained, tears of joy, and discouragement due to obstacles. Obstacles such as: inability to speak English at the level expected by employers, no access or ability to use a computer or navigate the Internet. Gaining employment has become very complex and requires many skills beyond what has been typical for entry level workers, making it difficult many of our job seekers to even step onto the workforce playing field, much less compete effectively.
But now, it is time for my personal journey to continue. I have accepted a position as a care coordinator with Thomas Allen that will further my growth and development as a social worker and will allow me to pursue my master’s degree in social work. I have very much enjoyed my journey with Daily Work and will greatly miss serving our job seekers and social work interns.
So as I depart, I would like to say that I believe that knowledge is power. As educated people, we are charged with the responsibility to use our knowledge to impact our communities, change the structures of our society, and promote opportunities for those who lack access.
At Daily Work, our job seekers lack access to employment and we work hard as case managers to provide them with the access needed to empower them to attain their dreams and goals. As the end of the year approaches, I hope that you too will reach high and dream deep for the job seekers at Daily Work and consider an additional contribution at this critical time. Thank you for making a difference in my life journey…and the journeys of so many others. Everyone at Daily Work is grateful for and inspired by your generosity. To make a contribution, click here.
From Julie Hoff, executive director: We are grateful that Theresa's journey brought her to Daily Work. She helped bring our program, both for job seekers and social work interns, to another level while she was here with us. We wish her bountiful success and happiness in her next pursuits in life.
