Job Seeker: Amina
Success is a Family Journey
For 10 years, Amina had moved through customer service and sales positions at Walmart, finally becoming a department manager at the St. Paul Midway store. When the store closed in late 2019, she was laid off.
Amina came to Daily Work hoping to leverage her experience into a better job, but just weeks after coming to the office the world stopped due to COVID-19, forcing her to take time to care for her four children, ages one through nine. Determined to keep developing her skills, Amina continued meeting weekly with Jana, her case manager, to practice her English.
“We can always figure out what we are saying to each other, which is really nice,” Amina says.
Through Daily Work’s MicroGrant and TECI Programs Amina received a home computer and discounted internet service, passed an English language proficiency test and is now taking a course to become a certified nursing assistant, and enrolled in driving lessons to prepare for the “behind-the-wheel” portion of the license test.
Amina is nervous about the future, but practices her English and studies with her children at night. “Sometimes they help me, and sometimes, I help them,” she laughs. While her oldest son dreams of becoming a doctor and her daughter a teacher, Amina ultimately hopes to continue her own education by starting with a two-year nursing degree while working as a nursing assistant.
If you work, you can do many things. If you don’t, then life is just dreams.
