Home Computers are Now a Basic Need for Job Seekers

Felicia, a single mom of two boys, was studying for her bachelor’s degree and looking for employment when COVID hit. “I had learned about Daily Work from my Pastor,” she recounted. “And that they’ve got a lot of love and empathy for clients.”

The family was getting by on a small, monthly social security benefit and assistance from her church, but it was not enough. “I’m working towards becoming an attorney,” stated Felicia. “I want to help people and work in civil rights.” But in the meantime, they had immediate financial needs.

All three were at high-risk for COVID complications, which meant the boys had to do classes online and Felicia was restricted to working from home. The kids’ school helped bring the internet and tablets into the house, but the family did not have a personal computer.

Technology [was] my biggest barrier to employment…I was actually let go from a great paying sales job because not having a computer to get through orientations was causing issues. It didn’t look professional.

In November, Felicia became the first recipient in our Technology Essentials Core Initiative (TECI) program that provides technology essentials for job seekers.

“Everyone at Daily Work really goes beyond their job description,” Felicia declared. They helped me think about what I know how to do and how I might use that for work. And they gave our family a couple of bikes, too. Daily Work is a real blessing to us.”

Just two weeks after getting her laptop computer, Felicia was re-hired for the great sales job from which she was let go.
