We at Daily Work are heartbroken and grieving the devastating loss of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the attempted murder of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and communities impacted by this tragedy. We stand in solidarity with all who are mourning, and we reject violence in any form as a means of resolving our differences.
I first met Melissa Hortman when she was seeking the endorsement of a nonprofit board on which I served as chair. I remember being struck by her courage, she was a year younger than me and boldly stepping forward to run for public office. She impressed all of us that day. We knew she was a rising star. Though I never knew her well, I’ve long admired how she grew into a respected, principled leader, deeply committed to justice and equity.
The whole team at Daily Work remembers the warmth and curiosity of Senator John Hoffman. This past February, we participated in the MN Social Services Association Day at the Capitol. We had several interns with us, many of whom were meeting elected officials for the first time. While we were waiting outside another senator’s office, Senator Hoffman took a moment to greet us and learn about our work. His genuine interest and joyful sharing of his impressive collection of political memorabilia made our group feel welcome, seen, and valued. For our interns, and for us, it was a powerful reminder that true leadership is rooted in connection and care.
At Daily Work, we believe in the power of relationships to build a more just and compassionate world. Melissa and Mark Hortman and John and Yvette Hoffman reflect that spirit. Their commitment to service, community, and one another calls all of us to remember our shared humanity and continue working for a future rooted in nonviolence, dignity, and justice.
In service and remembrance,
Julie Hoff
