Emil was born in NE Minnesota on the Iron Range. He graduated from UMD and later obtained a Master of Arts degree and a law degree at the University of Minnesota. He is married to Donna, his high school sweetheart, and they have one son and two grandkids. Emil had a "split career", first working in union labor relations and law and then becoming an alcohol and drug counselor. He currently enjoys volunteering at Daily Work, traveling, especially to someplace warm in the winter, and being at his cottage in the Superior National Forest in the summer.
